The English Riviera Wheel

After the success of the balloon – here comes the wheel.

Taller than Nelson’s Column at the dizzy height of nearly 60 meters, the English Riviera Wheel will be sited in Princess Gardens, Torquay, next to the Pavilion, and give breathtaking 360 degree views across the Bay from Monday 20 August to Wednesday 31 October 2012.

The impressive wheel, which is coming to the Bay direct from London’s Olympic celebrations, has 40 enclosed lit gondolas, each of which can carry up to six passengers and can also take wheelchairs. The wheel is almost completely silent in operation featuring the very latest in observation wheel technology and is suitable for all ages.

The wheel opens to the public on Monday 20 August on the same day that the Bay is welcoming another auspicious visitor, the cruise ship Prinsendam. The ship is marketed as the ‘Elegant Explorer’ and carries around 800 passengers, some of whom will be welcomed to explore the English Riviera.

Torbay Mayor Gordon Oliver, who will be taking the inaugural flight at 9am on Monday 20 August said: “The English Riviera Wheel will offer breathtaking views of the Bay from a rare perspective. I hope it will be yet another exciting attraction to encourage both residents and visitors to come and enjoy all that we have to offer in the English Riviera.”

The English Riviera Wheel is being brought to the Bay by Nottingham-based business Mellors Group, which was granted temporary planning permission for it by Torbay Council on Monday.

James Mellors, Director Mellors Group said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Torbay Council and The English Riviera Tourism Company to bring the English Riviera wheel to such a spectacular location in the UK. It really is the perfect location for a special day out for everyone.”

Carolyn Custerson, Chief Executive of the English Riviera Tourism Company said: “The English Riviera already has more attractions for our visitors to enjoy than any other resort in the UK, with such breathtaking scenery we hope that our newest attraction will encourage many more visitors to follow.”

The installation of the wheel will take approximately one week by ten specially trained and qualified personnel using an inbuilt hydraulic system, and will be transported to Torbay on ten specially adapted trailers.

During the 12-minute ride there will be commentary on the Bay’s history and events and attractions to enjoy in the English Riviera produced in partnership with the radio station Heart.
