5 Great Surrounding Towns of Torquay

 

Torquay is a popular seaside town that belongs to the Torbay area and the county of Devon which is on the South West coast of England. There are several surrounding towns worth exploring that are as fascinating as the town of Torquay.

Teignmouth
Teignmouth is towards the north. Going to this town will take you on the spectacular coast road where you can see steep cliffs and get the chance to marvel at views of Lyme Bay and Labrador Bay. It passes through Babbacombe and Maidencombe as well. Teignmouth is also a beautiful seaside town with the River Teign as the main tributary for different water crafts. There is a Victorian pier and beautiful beaches, local pubs and popular restaurants. Regatta time brings in a lot of visitors to this town. Shaldon is just across the bridge from Teinmouth.

Shaldon
On the Torquay side of the River Teign is Shaldon which is a rich village that is set between the river and the hills. There is a village green, bowling green, beach, wildlife park, tea garden, 18 hole golf course as well as coffee shops and 3 pubs worth exploring. A passenger ferry operating since the 13th century takes you from the beach to Teignmouth. Explore secluded Ness Cove Beach which is accessible through a smuggler’s tunnel. This town is popular for the annual Shaldon Festival in June that brings in popular musicians.

Paignton
Paignton has been a popular seaside resort for years, becoming most popular during the Victorian times. This place is popular for its conservation zoo, the amusement arcades as well as the beautiful beaches where you can enjoy the safe shallow waters while having a taste of the delectable Devon ice creams. Stroll in its interesting harbour and explore the Fairy cove just over the harbor wall.

Brixham
Brixham shows you what a traditional fishing town is with its display of beautiful pastel coloured cottages owned by the fishermen. You will also see the inner harbour and the long breakwater which makes sure that Brixham is protected from the rough seas. Enjoy some wonderful meals at the marina where there is a line of bars and restaurants. Other activities at Brixham can include a visit to the local beaches and Shoalstone for saltwater outdoor swimming.

Dartmouth
From Paignton, you can easily go to Dartmouth through the Dart Valley Steam Railway. This means taking the 30-minute train ride to Kingswear and a 5-minute ferry that goes across the River Dart. Dartmouth is popular for its rich marine history. Worth exploring are its castle, the Royal Navy College, interesting water front properties and the variety of pubs and restaurants that serve you the freshest seafood.
